Democratic States, D.C. Sue Trump Administration

(MENAFN) Twenty-four states led by Democrats, along with the District of Columbia, have initiated a legal challenge against the Trump administration’s choice to suspend $6 billion in financial support designated for after-school initiatives, according to a report released on Monday.

A news outlet reported that the lawsuit alleges the administration breached both the Constitution and federal statutes by freezing funds meant to support after-school activities, English language instruction for non-native speakers, professional development for educators, arts and science education, and programs combating bullying.

Typically distributed on July 1, these funds were withheld abruptly, without any prior warning or indication of when the money might be released.

New York Attorney General Letitia James criticized the decision, stating it "will be devastating for students and families," with a particular impact on immigrant populations and economically disadvantaged communities.

Meanwhile, the Office of Management and Budget explained that the hold on the funding is part of a review process aimed at ensuring the money is not utilized to “subsidize a radical leftwing agenda.”

A spokesperson from the Office of Management and Budget was cited as saying, “In one case, NY public schools used English Language Acquisition funds to promote illegal immigrant advocacy organizations. In another, Washington state used funds to direct illegal immigrants towards scholarships intended for American students.”
